UN Voices Support for Sudan Peace Plan

(MENAFN) The UN on Friday voiced its backing for a peace proposal put forward by Sudan's Prime Minister Kamil Idris during a Security Council session, urging an immediate halt to hostilities.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to stress that achieving enduring and inclusive peace is crucial, according to his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

"The United Nations supports a resolution that puts an end to the ongoing conflict and preserves the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan," Dujarric affirmed.

The Secretary-General is calling on the conflicting sides to agree to an immediate stop to fighting and to establish a durable ceasefire, Dujarric added.

“The Secretary-General encourages all Sudanese actors to prioritize compromise and the articulation of a shared vision for a civilian-led transition," he said.

Guterres’ personal envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, "remains ready to advance consultations with both parties on achieving an inclusive and sustainable resolution to the conflict," Dujarric further noted.

Earlier this week, Idris introduced a peace plan to the Security Council on Monday, urging an immediate ceasefire under the supervision of the UN, African Union, and League of Arab States. The initiative also called for the withdrawal of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from seized areas into monitored camps.
