UN chief backs Sudan peace plan, urges for Immediate truce

(MENAFN) The United Nations voiced support on Friday for a peace initiative proposed by Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris, urging an immediate halt to the ongoing conflict. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of pursuing inclusive and lasting peace in the country, according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

“The United Nations supports a resolution that puts an end to the ongoing conflict and preserves the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan,” Dujarric said, adding that Guterres calls on all parties to agree on a ceasefire and a sustainable end to hostilities.

Guterres also encouraged Sudanese actors to prioritize compromise and work toward a shared vision for a civilian-led transition. His personal envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, remains ready to facilitate talks aimed at an inclusive and sustainable resolution.

Idris presented his plan to the UN Security Council earlier this week, proposing a ceasefire monitored by the UN, African Union, and League of Arab States, alongside the withdrawal of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from occupied territories to supervised camps. However, the RSF has rejected the initiative, according to an adviser to RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The Sudanese crisis, which erupted in April 2023 between the army and the RSF, has killed tens of thousands and displaced around 13 million people. Currently, the RSF controls most of Darfur in the west, except for parts of northern North Darfur under army control, while the army maintains authority over the rest of the country, including the capital Khartoum.
