Touadera Wins Central African Republic Elections
Touadera, a 68-year-old former mathematics professor, first came to power in 2016 and was reelected in 2020 with 53.16% of the vote in the initial round.
His latest candidacy was made possible by the 2023 constitutional referendum, which abolished term limits and extended presidential terms to seven years.
During his campaign, Touadera emphasized improvements in national security, attributing them to cooperation with Russian security contractors—restructured from the Wagner Group—and Rwandan forces. These partnerships helped reclaim territory from rebel groups and facilitated peace agreements, while also expanding Moscow’s influence in the resource-rich nation, granting access to gold, diamonds, lithium, and uranium.
International observers, including the African Union and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), described election day as largely peaceful, despite persistent insecurity in some eastern regions.
Nevertheless, the main opposition coalition, the Republican Bloc for the Defense of the Constitution (BRDC), boycotted the vote, labeling it unfair. Other challengers, such as opposition leader and former prime minister Anicet-Georges Dologuele and former prime minister Henri-Marie Dondra, accused authorities of restricting their campaigns, including limitations on provincial travel.
